Diagnostic Wax-Ups
Plan the Outcome Before You Touch the Tooth

CIT Dental Lab’s Diagnostic Wax-Ups are the essential pre-treatment planning tool for complex restorations, smile makeovers, and full-mouth rehabilitations giving dental practices across the Eastern United States a three-dimensional preview of the planned outcome before a single tooth is prepared. A properly articulated wax-up lets you evaluate esthetics, check the occlusal scheme, identify potential problems, communicate the plan to your patient, and use the result as the direct blueprint for provisional fabrication. Plan before you prepare. Deliver a better final result. Free 2-way shipping.

What a Diagnostic Wax-Up Does for Your Case

A diagnostic wax-up built on properly mounted, articulated models accomplishes several things simultaneously: it allows occlusal evaluation of the planned restorations against the patient’s actual bite, it provides esthetic evaluation of tooth shape, length, and proportions, it identifies early whether proposed tooth positions are achievable with the planned preparation design, and it gives your patient a tangible preview of the planned outcome before committing to treatment. That last point alone patient case acceptance makes wax-ups valuable for high-value esthetic cases.

When to Order a Diagnostic Wax-Up

How to Submit a Wax-Up Case

Submit accurate maxillary and mandibular full-arch impressions (PVS preferred) or digital scans of both arches, along with a proper centric relation or maximum intercuspation bite record and face-bow transfer if applicable. Include a detailed written description of your treatment goals tooth lengths, shapes, material choices, and any other specific requests. CIT mounts the models and builds the wax-up to your specifications, returning the mounted wax-up case with articulator for your clinical evaluation.

Frequently Asked Questions

For the most accurate diagnostic wax-up particularly for full-mouth rehabilitations or cases involving vertical dimension changes a face-bow transfer and proper centric relation bite record are strongly recommended. These allow CIT to mount the models in a way that accurately reflects the patient's condylar position and jaw relationship, making the wax-up clinically meaningful. For simple esthetic wax-ups involving tooth shape changes without VDO alteration, a centric occlusion bite record may suffice.
Yes. You can request a silicone putty matrix (or stent) made from the diagnostic wax-up to facilitate chairside provisional fabrication. The matrix serves as a template to press your provisional material into the precise shape of the planned final restoration.
Yes. Digital diagnostic wax-ups (digital smile design) can be performed on scan data submitted via digital impressions. Digital wax-ups can be delivered as 3D files for evaluation, converted to 3D-printed models, or used directly for milling provisional restorations.
