Monolithic milled crowns even beautiful ones are limited by what a milling machine and digital workflow can produce. Layered zirconia takes it further. CIT’s technicians build up porcelain in multiple layers over the zirconia coping, creating depth, halo effects, incisal translucency, and characterization that make the restoration look genuinely three-dimensional in the patient’s mouth. Frequently Asked Questions

The zirconia substructure provides excellent strength and biocompatibility, but the hand-layered porcelain is subject to the same chipping risk as traditional PFM porcelain when under high occlusal stress. Aesthetic layered zirconia is therefore best indicated for anterior cases in the esthetic zone where occlusal load is lower and esthetics are the primary priority. For high-load posterior cases, full-contour monolithic zirconia is more appropriate.
For best results on layered zirconia cases, submit: (1) your shade prescription using VITA Classical or 3D-Master, (2) digital shade photographs of the prepared tooth and adjacent natural teeth in natural lighting, and (3) any specific characterization notes cervical shade depth, incisal translucency level, surface texture preferences, or specific tooth characteristics to replicate.
CIT's aesthetic layered zirconia uses a zirconia coping for the substructure stronger and more fracture-resistant than a full feldspathic or pressed ceramic coping. The overlying hand-layered porcelain achieves comparable or superior esthetic results to full-press ceramics. The zirconia base makes it a stronger, more durable platform while maintaining maximum esthetic potential.
Yes. For complex layered zirconia cases, submitting digital shade photographs is strongly recommended. Send clear photos of the adjacent teeth in natural (or standardized artificial) lighting alongside your shade prescription.
